Graphite materials can be separated by the individual graphite grain size, and they will support us in categorizing most of the graphite grades available in today's market into three types: Fine-grain graphite, medium-grain graphite and coarse-grain graphite, etc. Most graphite grades are available in different sizes and block shapes. Normally, the fine-grain graphite is smaller cross sections than the medium-grain graphite grades.

The fine structure of the graphite materials generally associated with high density allows them to exact machined details and exquisite surface finishes. The fine grain graphite typically refers to materials with individual particles ranging in size from 0.0001" up to 0.005". The grains of graphite will be milled to the specific particle size and blended isostatically pressed into the particular shape. When this material has about 5-15% of its volume made up of openings between the individual particles, these openings or porosity are very hard to see due to the small particles that make up the material. Applications for fine grain graphite materials are found across multiple industries and include crucibles, continuous casting dies, heating parts and electrical blocks etc. The structure of medium-grain graphite is a great tool for both roughing and finishing operations in many industrial applications. The medium grain graphite typically refers to materials with individual particles which are compressed or extruded into certain modules for a special shape. The porosities in this material are easily visible to human eye. Medium grain graphite materials are suitable for large parts or components, including furnace parts, trays, extrusion guides, self-lubricating bearings etc. For coarse grain graphite, there are many applications, for instance, it can provide an economical solution for an ongoing consumable situation, where a lot of raw material is required. The coarse grain material is a great material for manufacturing graphite crucibles, large ingot moulds and pouring throughs. Due to the large particle size and open porosity, it deals with thermal shock exceptionally well and can go with the change in temperature as molten metals contact its surface.
