Generally speaking,graphite electrodes are often used in ferroalloy furnace for smelting of ferroalloys. Ferroalloys are alloys of iron that are composed of one or more elements such as manganese, silicon, chromium and so on. Ferroalloys production means high temperature and chemical reaction and which need the use of graphite electrodes for their electrical conductivity and thermal resistance.

They are used as a conductor of electric energy and are inserted into the furnace where they come in contact with the raw materials. The high temperature in the furnace causes the raw materials to melt and react chemically to produce the desired ferroalloy. They are preferred over other kinds of electrodes because of their high electrical conductivity, low thermal expansion, and high mechanical strength and make them fit for the harsh conditions of the ferroalloy furnace.

Applications

Production of ferrosilicon: Graphite electrodes are used in submerged arc furnaces (SAF) to produce ferrosilicon. Ferrosilicon is an alloy composed of iron and silicon that is used when produce steel and cast iron.

Production of ferromanganese: They are used in SAFs to produce ferromanganese, an alloy composed of iron, manganese, and carbo,too. Ferromanganese is used as a deoxidizer and alloying agent while produce steel.

Production of ferrochrome: In electric arc furnaces (EAF) we often use graphite electrodes to produce ferrochrome, an alloy composed of iron, chromium, and carbon. Ferrochrome is used as an alloying agent if produce stainless steel.

Production of other ferroalloys: Graphite electrodes can also be used to produce other ferroalloys, for example, ferrovanadium, ferrotungsten, and ferromolybdenum and they are used as alloying agents when manufacture many types of steel.
