Carbon electrodes are widely used in the production of metallic silicon due to their unique properties. Carbon electrodes are used as current conductors in electric furnaces where silicon metal, elemental phosphorus or small quantities of other specialty products are produced.

 

Process for smelting silicon with high graphite carbon electrode in an electric furnace

Carbon electrodes play a major role in the production process of submerged arc furnaces and are mainly used to produce metallic silicon. The process consists of the continuous reduction of quartz (SiO 2 ) to silicon through a reduction mixture according to the simplified relationship SiO 2 , + 2C -> Si + 2CO.

As a component of the mixture, carbon in the form of mineral carbon, petroleum coke, charcoal, wood chips can be used. Electrical current flows through the electrode between the contact plate and the electrode tip, causing the ignition of an arc at extremely high temperatures (>2000°C), which is necessary to reduce quartz to silicon. The silicon is then removed from the bottom of the furnace.

The requirements for high graphite carbon electrodes are:

 

- Good electrical conductivity: to withstand the high current densities required by metallurgical processes.

- Good thermal conductivity: minimizes the temperature difference inside the electrode during use, thereby reducing internal stress.

- Good mechanical strength: able to withstand stress during use.

- High level of chemical purity: avoid contamination of the final product.

- Easy to install: Convenient and expedited electrode column extension operation.

- Precise machining of the outer surface of the connector: avoids problems when the connector passes through the retaining clip and contact shoe and facilitates the flow of current from one electrode to the next.
