Graphite electrodes are a conductive material in electric arc furnace steel production. What's more, coating technology has been applied to graphite electrodes since 1969 in steel melting industries. While graphite electrodes are used in producing steel, the dimensions of graphite electrodes are around 200-600MM. There are two main benefits of coating applications: First, it can protect the surface of the electrode while used in the furnace from oxidation. When the oxidation happens, the tip part of the graphite electrode remains larger than the one without being coated. The linear rate of wear of the graphite electrode is also decreased. We can see obviously reduced consumption while the outside part has the treatment of coating application. The second reason for coating application on graphite electrodes is the ability of conductivity can be increased with the low resistivity coating.
The coating consists of three layers, and they serve different functions. The first layer is for oxidation-resistant coating. A major part of the electrodes can be protected in the high-temperature process. Above the first layer, a sprayed layer of coating helps to nullify any porosity of the previous coating layer. The final layer is mainly for increasing the ability of conductivity and prevent from having thermal shock.
Xinhui Carbon sophisticated coating gives excellent antioxidation properties to graphite electrodes and reduces the unnecessary consumption of graphite considerably. Coated electrodes are used to produce electric steel as well as for processing of non-metallic products in electric arc furnaces for other metals.
