Issues of Utilizing Graphite Electrodes in Steel Melting Process

Graphite electrodes play essential roles in the operation of steel melting furnaces. However, from the feedback of our clients, they always encounter the recurring issue of graphite electrode degradation and even failure. Hoping this article can shed light on the basic problems associated with the usage of graphite electrodes in the steelmaking industry.
For the purpose of accelerating the metal melting, the electrodes and metal in the electric arc are very important elements for the quality continuation of the whole process. Obviously, the melting process will be badly interrupted if electrodes are damaged or broken which will lead to the arc going out.
Technologically, the production of high-quality graphite electrodes for heavy-duty arc furnaces is quite complex. For heavy-duty furnace, the cost of graphite electrodes is a bit higher due to the high-power consumption and higher cost of charge materials. For instance, the expense of electrodes, while the operating of furnaces of ordinary power for smelting steel, is only 8% of the cost of steel. However, in heavy-duty furnaces, this number possibly can reach or exceed 15% of the expense of steel. From the data in our research lab, the consumption of graphite electrodes is not fixed but can wave within a certain range. For normal operation of furnaces is almost 4-8 KG/T. As shown in the following table, some other factors caused failure in steel melting as well.
According to the above analysis, we can conclude that the consumption of graphite electrodes in EAF steelmaking comes with lots of complicated reasons. It's not only on the quality of the electrodes, but also on the ways of operation of the factories in steelmaking.
