Difference between Graphite Electrodes and Carbon Electrodes

The graphite electrode and carbon electrode all are black cylinders and look quite similar. It always occurs to our mind that two electrodes are the same. However, on the aspect of manufacturing techniques of two electrodes, there exists a huge distinction. Using petroleum coke and pitch as main materials, coal tar as the binder, going through the process of raw material calcination, sieving, batching mixing and kneading, pressing, roasting, graphitization, processing and forming etc, graphite electrode is a kind of conducting material that also resist high temperature. People named it an artificial graphite electrode, shortly graphite electrode. Compared to graphite electrodes, the raw material in carbon electrodes is artificial graphite powder. While adding some recycled products, or foundry coke, binding with coal pitch and natural graphite, carbon electrodes are made by calcination after extrusion forming.

In terms of functions, graphite electrodes are applied in an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) for smelting different products. Thanks to its features of high density, temperature resistance and breaking strength, graphite electrodes can be used for melting steel scraps, zirconia, white corundum and brown fused alumina, etc. Carbon electrode has been widely used in the area of manufacturing of metallic silicon. The size of carbon electrodes always comes with extra large specifications, from 960-1500mm in diameter and 20000mm in length.
